IDSA Awards
I had the privilege of designing the three awards for the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), introduced this year by IDSA NYC and Women in Design NYC. Each award builds on Dan Lewis’ original Bronze Apple design from 1976, using his minimal approach with intersecting pieces as a shared visual language that ties the collection together.
The design of the Luminary Award embodies the symbolism of flame and light, reflecting guidance, inspiration, and growth. Its nod to the Statue of Liberty deepens the connection to the city, reinforcing themes of hope, opportunity, and resilience. There is movement in the flame, honoring the impact of the recipient’s advocacy while recognizing that meaningful progress for women in design is still ongoing.
The Inspiration Award recognizes designers behind projects that push creative boundaries and demonstrate the transformative power of design. Usually the result of effective collaboration, risk, and iterative building, the award immediately brought to mind the constant construction and energy that shapes NYC and its skyline.
Reminiscent of the Bronze Apple award and its established symbolism to the city, the Student Achievement Award emphasizes development and progress. The seeds are prominent, drawing attention to what begins from within and is then passed forward as knowledge to the next generation. Another apple to tie the collection to NYC, and maybe one day grow into a Bronze Apple.
